2022

Me voici avec celle d'Yves Paganelli.

Aubenas, 3 December. The last book fair of the year and so the last photos of the year. There were a lot of authors, but the public was not up to expectations. Sales neither. I took along some Christmas decorations to brighten up my table. I wasn't the only one to do that! During the day a few of us were given a slot in another room to read some extracts, and I was one. There was also a ceremony in which two people were inducted into the Brotherhood. Here I am with Yves Paganelli.

Super U, Ruoms, 22 novembre.

Super U supermarket, Ruoms, 22 November. I spent all day there, as part of their literary week with one author each day. It was a very good day for sales and contacts. The only thing was the cold! The table was right in front of the doors, so we got cold air every time someone came in. Oh, not forgetting the awful music of course, as well as the repeated announcements. You have to turn your ears off.

Saint Alban Auriolles, 18 novembre.

Saint Alban Auriolles, 18 November. An evening organised by the library with four author colleagues, during which we presented our books and talked about ourselves. After an interlude of eats and drinks we read extracts from our books. It was a very satisfying and friendly evening, we made pleasant contacts.

Salavas, 6 novembre.

Salavas, 6 November. This was a very good day for my books, as well as making interesting contacts, one of whom wants to organise an evening with a documentary and a debate in the cinema at Ruoms, and was interested in my book "Le baiser de Judas" which talks about getting drawn into a sect. She wanted me to participate. I hope the occasion does happen.

A refaire !

Joyeuse, 23 October. I had good reason to smile. There were only 9 of us in the room and people came to see us throughout the day - and bought loads of books. We all had a good day, and sales went through the roof! This is the sort of bookfair we're all looking for.

Morières-les-Avignon, 16 October. Lovely weather, we were able to eat outside. A lot of authors and a lot of visitors, but sales did not always go the way one would wish for some. For others it was a very good day. I sold a few books. The one on Jalès sells well. Here I am next to a "wishing tree", and not at my table. We could write down a wish and attach the piece of paper to the tree, which I duly did. Roger Iappini is with me. He drove me there.

It was very pleasant to chat to authors I'd seen elsewhere before in the Gard. Friendly atmosphere in the book fair, and lunch was supplied. It really is a shame that the public doesn't show after all the efforts deployed by the organisers. Alas, another book fair where sales weren't up to expectations.

Nice hall and a lot of visitors. Unfortunately not many buyers for those whose books didn't talk about local stuff. There were too many local editors compared to the size of the village and the fair.

In spite of all the efforts that went into organising this book fair, there weren't the visitors we'd hoped for, a bit surprising as it was taking place during the heritage weekend when people are out anyway, visiting places. From the point of view of the authors it was not a success, and sales were few. However, we did sometimes have a laugh among ourselves!

Lagorce, 11 septembre.

Lagorce, 11 September. Good weather after a few days of dampness. A good book fair, especially during the afternoon. However it wasn't as good as last year when it took place during the national heritage weekend. The book on Jales sold well, and perhaps it will encite people to come and see the commandery next weekend.

Vals-les-Bains, le 28 août. Beau temps.

Vals-les-Bains, 28 August. Good weather. Too many authors and not enough visitors. I don't know if I'll be present next year. Our friend from the Circle, Pierre Arnaud, was brought into the Brotherhood and I read the text prepared by Pierre Courouble, who couldn't be there that day. It all went off well.

Kana0 in Joyeuse, 16 August. The shop sells articles produced locally, including books by local authors. This was the first time they had organised a signing session. I had a few interesting chats with passers-by, but sales were not up to what we had expected. However, we mustn't give up here, the shop has to have time to establish itself as a meeting place for authors, as there's no bookshop in Joyeuse.

Belle Hoursette bookshop in Les Vans, 13 August. A hot morning, quite a few people stopped to chat. One said he'd thoroughly enjoyed the book about Jalès. A good statement to make in front of other people who'd stopped to look at the books!

Chassagnes, 7 August. I was invited to participate in the village fete with some readings. Luckily, we were in the shade and there was even a slight breeze. I read a few short stories, and put to the test my "medley" for the book I'd brought out, that gets the public to participate. Good pizza that was cooked in the village oven. No sales in spite of people having a look at my books. However, it was an interesting experience and can be better thought out, says Françoise, the village's delegate-mayor.

I was at the La Belle Hoursette bookshop during the evening market for a signing session. It was very hot even though the temperature had gone down a little. I chatted with a lot of people and sold several books, most of them being the one about Jalès. I also sold a translation in English of the book "The child who talked to the stars" by Pierre Courouble. It was a very pleasant evening.

Several of us went to this village where Jean-Claude Bourret, a nationally famous journalist/writer was giving a conference on the "Gevaudan Beast" (which devoured a lot of people in the 1760s). He was surrounded by the paintings by the Ardeche artist Gérard Lattier, and he revealed the Beast that was reconstructed from descriptions by the pathologists who studied it when it was finally killed. After the conference we inducted him into the Brotherhood, and I was able to place the medal round his shoulders. I also was pleased to see me in an article about it in the Dauphiné Libéré!

Joyeuse, 22 juillet.

Joyeuse 22 July. The Hôtel des Cèdres has organised a small local crafts market during the summer, and they asked authors from the Circle to participate. I set up table and books beside others. Some wind and clouds made the evening seem cooler, to our relief. However, the public was visibly absent, only a few people stopped and bought. I did manage to sell a book about Jalès to a Belgian family called Lemaire (my former married surname)!

I represented the Circle's "brotherhood of the Ardèche quill" in the parade and chapter of the Les Vans Olive brotherhood. Unfortunately I didn't have the banner with me, but at least I was there, our Confrérie was named and I saluted the public in its name.

Privas, 9 and 10 July. In spite of all the preparation, not many people came. Other things going on in the town? It was very hot? A notice pinned to a shop denigrating us? Who knows exactly why the public stayed away. A great pity.

During the afternoon we took a moment to talk about Nito, the oldest membre of the Circle, who died in June at the age of 92. He was an incredible person and was still writing right up to the end. His daughter was present. I was asked to say a few words. I'd pronounced the eulogy when he had been accepted into the Brotherhood.

Privas 21 June. I was interviewed by Henri Klinz for the radio RCF Ardèche. It was broadcast on 23 and 26 June .

La librairie La Belle Hoursette aux Vans, 18 juin. Chaud, chaud, chaud !

La Belle Hoursette bookshop in Les Vans, 18 June 2022. Unbearably hot!  Thank goodness I'd taken my fan with me! Quite a lot of contacts with people passing by. It was rare to see someone local which is astonishing for a  Saturday morning.

Dommage.

Supermarket Super U in Ruoms, 13 June

As part of their "Ardèche week", members of the Ardeche Authors' Cercle spent a day in the shop. I was with Odile Déchavanne. We chatted a lot throughout the day. There were a lot of people in the shop and a lot who went past us without looking. If we'd had books in German or Dutch, we would probably have sold quite a few, as the resulting sales weren't better than those at book fairs. A pity.

Labeaume, 6 June. A very hot day! The place is lovely, and we were well looked after. Fewer people came than last year. One of the visitors waxed enthusiastically about my novel around Jalès.

Bagard, 14 May. This was the first time the village had organised a fair and they looked after us well. The weather was beautiful, we were amongst trees. Quite a lot of people came along and showed interest.

Beauchastel, 26 March. This was the first time I'd participated in this book fair. A lot of people came and were interested, and so it was a good day. Very friendly atmosphere.

It was their first book fair, and they need to hone their organisation a bit. However, good atmosphere, nice hall and a buffet supplied at the end of the day. Quite a few people came along. The Saturday is not a good day in my opinion to have a fair, as people have other things to do. They're more inclined to go out on a Sunday.

Serrières, 12 March, in the north of the Ardèche. I had never been to a book fair that far north in the Department. It was the first time the village was organising a book fair. The midday meal was supplied, and there were quite a lot of visitors. I sold a few books, a task rendered difficult because I was between some really local writers (so people went for them) and a big-headed author who was for ever monopolising the passers-by who left quickly once they could get away and so passed me by.

Labeaume, 25 February, I was in Labeaume talking about how I'd come from England to the Ardèche. I covered the 28 years from 1970 before I arrived in the Ardèche rapidly, adding 1967 and 1969, as they could be considered as preparing me for the reste.

I shared the evening with a young man called Valentin Anconière, who talked about hitch-hiking in South America. It was good a idea putting us together, as we are totally different: age, why we went to another country, what we did there, and how we came to write.
